WHY DO WE BUY JEWELLERY?

Reflecting on the pieces I've sold recently, and who I sold them to, it occurred to me how weird it is that we buy shiny adornments for our bodies in the first place.

So why do we buy (handmade) jewellery? Here are four reasons.

1. GIFTS. Today someone bought some earrings for their mother, who’s originally from Nottinghamshire, so connecting the gift back to her heritage was a thoughtful choice. These customers also deeply appreciated the ethical policy behind my work, so felt comfortable buying from me. We buy meaningful gifts to show people we’re thinking about them, that we know them and that we love them 🥰

2. SENTIMENT. A piece of jewellery to remind us of a place, a person, an experience. I had a chat with someone today who said they’ve started buying a special piece of jewellery for themselves every time something worth celebrating or marking happens – what a lovely idea! I still have the pair of handmade boots I bought with my first ever proper grown-up month’s salary.

3. A TREAT. Whether you’ve been having a hard time recently, have been working extra hard or just feel like you need a little self-care, buying ourselves a piece of jewellery sends a clear message: you’re worth having something beautiful and lasting. You deserve it!

4. SELF-EXPRESSION. This is my category, it’s very close to my heart and I have a lot to say about it… So I’ll do it in another post 😉

I feel so privileged to be able to witness people buying jewellery for so many important, meaningful reasons 🖤
